How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our film represents social groups in a subtle way because we do not show any proper characters during the opening two minutes because we felt that a more abandoned look will be more effective than using lots of characters because this will detract from the feeling of emptiness and the apocalyptic genre which we want to create. Because there are no characters present in the opening sequence this evaluation question is extremely tricky however we use the scenery to help create representation by showing no life meaning that no one will survive the disaster. This subtle yet very powerful message acts as a way to represent social groups because some people will watch our films and hopefully take away a message of how nuclear war is certain death for everyone because the power of these missiles is just immense. Due to this hidden message in our film the social group we hope to represent is the older wiser person acting as a warning to the younger generations who will come to watch the film because it looks good.

The other way we hope to represent different social groups is by the teenagers walking across the car park unaware of what is about to happen in their lives again acting as a hidden message to take care of their planet because they will never know what is going to happen.

Question 6: What Have You Learnt About Technologies From The Process of Constructing This Product?

Question1: In What Ways Does Your Media Product Use, Develop or Challenge Forms and Conventions of Real Media Products?

The Fallout opening scene challenges typical forms and conventions of typical media products immediately from the start because the lack of characters which are shown during the opening sequence. We have intentionally done this to challenge typical forms which all films abide by we wanted to engage with the audience immediately encouraging them to focus in order to understand the reason as to why no characters are shown they may come up with their own ideas as to why no one has been shown maybe because they are already dead or they know something the others don't.
Anyway this is explained later on in the film because we develop the storyline to slowly increase the number of characters in the film rather than start with lots of characters and then having nowhere to take the story.

However our media product does use the enigma code constantly making the audience question what is happening because they want to know so the story can progress. We will constantly use the enigma code throughout our whole product to keep our audience guessing as they have no idea of what is coming meaning they remain engaged in the film and enjoy their film experience getting the most they possibly can out of our film.

Music Research

Music for my film needs eerie and set a tone as soon as it starts. Music can really make a film feel a lot scarier and can make a good film a great film.
Here is a siren sound which we are thinking off using because it makes it sound as if things are coming to an end.

This sounds like a broadcast to let people know the world is coming to an end making the film sound more realistic.

Here is an old radio sound which we may use because it makes it sound as if normal things have stopped and things are ending.

Prop List

No props where needed in the making of my film as we didn't plan to use any. but we did need a group of friends to walk past our cameras unaware that we was filming them so it gave the look that everything was normal to start with but then it changes. also we wanted a bird to sit on top off the floodlight so it shows there is still life and not everything is dead yet so we knew they often perched there so by chance one day when filming here we got the footage we needed off it on the floodlight.

Shooting Schedule

This is the shooting schedule for our film The Fallout as you can see we need to film in a number of different locations this means we need to film on a couple of days to enable us to gain good quality shots to prevent the need of rescheduling more filming dates putting us behind on our filming. The shots we need have been described by doing this we are aware of what we need to capture when we are on location meaning we can get our shots as close to perfect as we can. it is important we stick to this schedule in order to begin editing on time.

Peer Evaluation

From my feedback on my film, Fallout I can see that everyone thought the editing was very good and no one faulted it but what everyone also said was all the footage was good apart from the bomb they felt it was very unrealistic and that it let the film down a bit they felt we should of shown it in a different way to make that sense better. Some people thought the opening needed to last longer and in that extra footage it needed to be explained more so that they 100% was going to understand what was coming up in the film. One person said the titles were good but said they wanted to see characters in an opening. And lastly a couple off people said that they loved the tense build up.

Blog Reflection

Have you learned new online programmes for showing off work?

I have used Prezi as an alternative to PowerPoint to complete some of the tasks given to me.At first i found it difficult but every day we used it i learn a little more about the software and also I found that it looked nicer and the transitions were interesting too.

What mark out of 20 is it so far?

I think my blog would get 15/20 so far because i have nearly reached the target amount of posts however i need to go over all of them and add much more detail.

Where could you be more thorough or a little less complacent?

I think I have been thorough on my posts because I made sure I completed each point before I went to the next one.

Is it fun to look at?

I try to keep my blog looking modern and also with lots of images and bright vibrant colours.

Three targets to improve my blog:

Add more detail to evaluation posts
Use every part of D.I.S.T.I.N.C.T in my Genre task

Use more media technical terms in my posts

Mise en Scene

Mise en Scene
Today’s lesson consisted of the study of Mise en Scene. This French terminology roughly translates to 'Whats in the Scene'. As the translation suggests we spent the hour discussing the ways in which various decisions can impact the scene in question. We were told how their are 5 basic categories which can be manipulated in order to give effect to the viewer. These included:
Settings and props
Costumes, hair and makeup
Facial expression and body language
Lighting and colour
Positioning of character

When all of these features are collated a scene is effectively created, although when not collaborated correctly, the results can be disastrous. If these factors aren’t to match, it is evident that the viewer will lose interest and subsequently zone out. We discovered this after passing around a piece of paper in groups and each scribing one of the elements of Mise En Scene. We recieved a scene which consequently didn’t make sense. Following on we analysed a scene from Skyfall, James Bonds most recent outing. We discussed the effectiveness of Iconology, the act of using famous landmarks or objects which are primarily related to a given area.

Semiotics

Denotations
The literal or primary meaning of a given thing, in contrast to the feelings or ideas that the thing suggests

The denotations of this poster are that a large out of control party is occurring and the man at the center is not involved.

Connotations
An idea or feeling which a thing invokes for a person in addition to its literal or primary meaning.

The Connotations of this movie:

The connotations of this movie give a more extreme view to the person viewing it. We understand from the way the character dressed that he is of high importance. Also,  the way in which the camera has captured his stance that he is a proud man and possibly the owner of the chaos occurring. This is also supported by the colors he is dressed in. Gold’s and black connotate importance and wealth. We can also see from the dwarf behind that the chaos is not limited to formally dressed that he is dressed in. Gold and blacks connotate importance and wealth. We can also see from the dwarf behind that the chaos is not limited to the formally dressed business men but is in fact an open party. Not limited to dwarfs, the audience can see a dressed gown woman meaning the business men mix business and pleasure in the work place. Even the text and the way it is displayed connotes importance. For example the use of the capitalized 'WOLF' screams power to the viewer.

The Denotations of this movie:

The Denotations of this movie give the idea that it is hectic and he is in the middle of it looking smug and also he is wearing smart clothes which shows that he is rich, also the word "wolf" gives us the idea that he is the biggest of "Wall Street".In the poster we also see a women that is half naked which implies sex which also shows that he can have whatever he wants.

Narrative

In todays lesson we were taught about some famous names in the historic film industry. Not your modern day icons, the lesson centered around Vladimir Propp, Todorov, Levi-Strauss and Roland Barthes.

We were made familiar with their studies, primarily Bathes' statements about movie. These include Symbolic references: for example a holy cross being used to connotative a belief in God or other religious  subjects. We studied action; what the character does in the film in order for the audience to become familiar with them. Finally we studied Enigma. This is the study of how the media manipulates the mind in order to make the viewer ask questions.

  • Roland Barthes

  • Todorov

  • Levi-Strauss

Other studys included:
Propp's idea on basic characters which always feature in media. These are the 'Hero', the 'Hero Helper', the 'Villain' and finally the 'Princess or Damsel'.
Todorovs study of how stories always start at equilibrium. As they continue they develop problems which must be overcome to return to equilibrium.

Levi-Strauss' "Binary Opposition" - The study of oppositions featuring heavily in movies, for example 'Good v Evil' or 'Black v White'

Institution

Big Talk Productions is a British Film and television production company founded by Nira Park in 1995.They specialize in the genre Comedy, Below are some films they have produced.

2012Sightseers
2013The World's End
2013In Fear
2014Cuban Fury

Big Talk Productions will be the main distributor of our film because they have their feet firmly grounded in the marketing aspect of film because of this we will choose them to give us the best possible distribution using their connections with other brands and cinemas to give our film the best showing in a number of different cinemas.

Our film The Fallout would be a wide base release meaning that many platforms will be used in order to give a wide number of people an opportunity to watch our film in any way they want whether that be in the cinema or on their home TV through third party platforms such as Netflix or Amazon Prime by opening up our film to these different platforms we can branch out and reach a large number of people to make the most amount of profit possible.

Our film will be shown in the smaller cinemas like the picture house and not the big cinema giants like Odeon and Cineworld because our film isn't big enough for them to invest because they are all about making money from secondary sales like refreshments and if they don't have enough people watching our film they will not make enough money to make it worthwhile.

The picture house cinema however are more likely to take our film and show it to the target audience not to make a profit but to give people pleasure from watching a small film in an equally small cinema as they believe the film and the atmosphere is more important than the bums on seats philosophy the larger companies hold.

Film Certificate

We had to decide what film certificate to give it. When in the planning stages for our film, we decided that giving it an age rating of 15 would be most appropriate as from the outset we chose that our film will involve some traces of death and violence, however the age cannot be to high because 15-21 yr old is the average age for cinema goers .

Question 5: How did you attract/address your audience?

Question 7: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Question 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

This film would not be a internet only release as we felt this would not make enough money as something like selling DVD and in the box office would. the film will be able to go on TV if wanted by the TV company hoping that people would watch it and maybe buy it on DVD after watching it.

It would not be an art-house film as art-house films tend to be in black and white and as our films is in colour I don't think it would fit in to the sort of film production they make so I would most properly go with big talk who are a comedy based company from London who have made big films such as Paul and TV series such as him and her and threesome. I think  big talk would be good because they have produced big films before and as an alternative option it has the possibility off going on TV with them which would be great for us because it could create more income.
This would not be some next big Hollywood film but it may have some opportunities to franchise with things such as t-shirts and other merchandise in other stores. This would be good because it would promote the film with people seeing other people with our film on it and also would give us more income from the film. This is an example which the film RIO did, which was a huge film that made millions of pounds.

Inspirational Ideas

In this lesson our teacher showed us some previous tasks which people have created to be there final piece. From this we learnt that there are many genres and themes which are used a lot because they are what people have seen over and over again and because of this the examiners have become tired of these genres and therefore could mark people down because they will be viewing the same things over and over again meaning they become bored. Because of this we will decide to make a less common genre which will enable us to meet the higher marks which are available and hopefully entertain the examiner.
We also assessed some of the tasks which we were shown in order of how much we enjoyed watching them we also tried to grade them but we didn't understand much about the grading criteria.
From the pieces we were shown there were a couple which really engaged is and looked really good, all of the titles clearly took a long time to get everything on the right places however from viewing these we saw what we need to achieve in order to get the best marks.

We were also given our groups we will be in for the task for this one I am with Steve and Charlie. I think this group can be very strong as we have creative members as well as people who are good at editing on premiere.

The edge opening sequence was one which I liked because the editing on the titles are very good as they have obviously paid close attention to all of them ensuring they are all spot on. I also liked the music which added to the action. The use of older people chasing the one on roller skates helped the sequence to look more realistic. I didn't like the way he suddenly pulled out a bomb because there was no explanation as to why he had done this personally if the reason he had a bomb was explained I think it would be even better.

This is the opening sequence of Roses Are Red. I liked the titles because they have clearly spent a long time working on them to ensure that every title required was in the film.  The editing between shots was also good because they were clean cuts and not lots of black between the shots however the music did stutter where the editing may have been rushed because it does not sound right. I didn't like how the whole thing was filmed in one single location if they could have incorporated more locations into the sequence I feel it would be improved.
